Antique Skeleton Key Art

I recently saw these framed antique skeleton keys on Design Sponge.

I love skeleton keys and thought this was a great way to use them for an art piece. So, I decided I would create my own framed skeleton key piece!

My bathroom is currently a deep purple color with gold and brown accent colors. I had hung this candle holder on the right side of my mirror when I first moved in because I had it in my previous bathroom. But, since my wall color is already a darker shade, the dark brown candle holder and candle just weren't standing out on that wall like I would have liked it to.



I thought this would be the perfect place to add some skeleton key artwork!

I scored these bronze antique skeleton keys from Pick Your Plum not too long ago and was excited to use them for this project.



I had also found and bought this white distressed frame from an antique store in town several months ago for only $6! I wasn't sure at the time where I was going to put it, but the time has come. I decided to use it to frame the keys.



A white frame is just what I needed to lighten up this particular wall.

The next thing I did was to look for fabric to use as the backing behind the keys. I found this beige paisley printed fabric from JoAnn's. Since one of my accent colors is gold, I thought this would go well in the space. I also wanted the keys to stand out, so I wanted to have a more neutral/light background to achieve this.



The frame came with a piece of cardboard backing. I used this to trace my fabric and cut it to the frame's size. Then I hot glued the edges around the cardboard.



Once I had the fabric backing in the frame, I arranged the keys how I wanted them.



I added a little hot glue on the back of each key and stuck it to the fabric. And there you have it.

I love how it looks on the wall too. Definitely brightens it up.

(P.S. sorry for the overexposed picture. There was a lack of natural light in the bathroom..)
