Well friends, I added the last minute touches to the deck this week and it's finished...for now at least :) Who knows, I may get an itch in a few months to change things, but for now it's done!
Here's the before picture::
Again, pit-i-ful. Alright, drumroll please....
Here are the after pictures::

*disclaimer: yes I know there are some bulbs in this strand of lights :)
What do you think?
Here's a close up of the centerpiece on the table. The turquoise wooden box was $5 and is actually supposed to be pot for a plant. I took a mason jar and filled it with rice and used a brown tea light to place inside to make it more of a centerpiece. (Idea from Shabby Nest)
Overall this project was super easy and pretty cheap. It took a couple of weekends to get everything painted and put together.
For supplies, the only things I bought were spray paint, the shutter and window, the turquoise paint, foam padding for the cushions and the burlap fabric covering the table.
The first thing I did was work on cushions. I have zero sewing abilities, so in order to make these I needed to find something that didn't require a needle and a thread.
I saw this post from Cottage in the Oaks where she covered existing outdoor cushions with a burlap coffee bag and fastened it with a staple gun. Well, my first problem was that I didn't have existing outdoor cushions. I did have an existing burlap coffee bag that I bought in Memphis several months ago. So I cut the bag in half to use one side for each cushion.
To make the cushions I bought some foam and safety pins from JoAnn's Fabric store.
I traced the size and shape of the chair bottom onto a piece of paper and then traced that onto the foam to cut out to make the cushion.
I wrapped the burlap bag around the foam and then secured it with safety pins. Might not be the most professional thing, but hey it worked!
I did that for the other cushion as well.
Here's how they look close up on the chairs.
Used a little rust-oleum in black to make the table and chairs look like new!
For the tablecloth, instead of trying to sew one, I bought 4 yards of burlap fabric and cut it in half. I draped one piece in one direction on the table, and draped the other one the other way. I bunched the bottom together and tied some jute string around the base. Voila!
The only thing left to do was paint the window and shutter I bought a few weekends ago.
1. I primed the window and shutter first.
2. Next step was to bust out the glass in the window.
3. I painted both the shutter and window this turquoise color.
4. The last thing I did was distress them both.
I was thinking I would need to sand them to get that distressed look, but the place where we bought these offered some tips on how to get that look without sanding. I dipped a dry brush in a cream colored paint and then wiped off the brush with a paper towel. Then I lightly went over both the window and shutter in varying directions to give it the look I was going for.
I would like to add something to this window at some point. Possibly hang a wreath. I recently made this coffee filter wreath to hang on the window in my room. Thinking something along those lines.
And lastly, I'm sure you all are wondering how the spray paint disaster on the deck looks.
Here's the before again::
Here's the after::
Almost gone right? :)
It seems that 'goof off' is helping to get this up, slowly but surely.
Alright, sorry for the long post. If you've made it this far, hope you've enjoyed!

It looks great Megan!! I love the seat cushions.
ReplyDeleteThanks Beth!
ReplyDeleteMegan, I LOVE those chairs!!! You did a great job, and my stuff always looks less than professional if you dig too deep, but who cares, you would never know the difference.

Thanks Kim! :)
ReplyDeletethis came out really sweet. just wondering how did you hang the window onto the siding?
ReplyDeleteI love your transformation! It is lovely! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteGeorgette, a previous tenant had nailed something into the siding so there was a leftover hole. I actually just used a large thumbtack to hang it :)
ReplyDeleteI love this. I wish I could find some of those coffee bags.
ReplyDeleteSO pretty! I love the cushions you made and of course the window and shutter! What a clever way to display a shutter -- love the lights! And as for the spray on the floor -- now that made me laugh because I've done the same thing! Yes, Goof Off is the best!
ReplyDeleteLove this tutorial. It inspires to makeover my patio this weekend!
ReplyDeleteQuestion - Where did you pick up your window and shutter? I am always on a lookout for them at affordable prices.
