Shelli is a fellow Nashvillian and has ah-mazing taste! When I stumbled upon her blog several months ago, both her personality and impeccable decorating style had me hooked!

Shelli will be helping answer a reader's question regarding mixing fabrics/patterns::

I always struggle with mixing fabrics that compliment each other- pillows, curtains, etc. I often fall into the matchy-matchy rut even though I prefer the look of a variety of patterns & fabrics. Any advice on pairing fabrics that are different, but work well together?

The floor is all yours Shelli :)

Think of choosing fabrics for your bed as you would pieces of clothing to make an outfit! You want them to coordinate, but not be too matchy matchy.

For instance, if your bedding is a blue print with small hints of kelly green, choose a bright bold kelly green pillow to give the color 'pop'!

If your sofa is a light taupe or beige, choose a fun geographic print in a bold brighter color like turquoise or magenta.

When trying to choose fabrics that pair well together, choose variations of the colors. Try a few in a lighter shade of the main color and a few in a darker shade of the main color.

Mix patterns. If you have a geographic fabric chosen, pair it with a coordinating floral or textured solid.

Have fun with fabrics, a little can go a long way!

Thanks so much Shelli! I know that being too matchy matchy is something I struggle with as well.

In case you had any doubt that Shelli has great taste and definitely knows how to mix fabric/prints just take a look at some of the rooms in her house::

  4. Shelli has fabulous style and taste as well as having a fun and bubbly personality. She's just a doll! Her home is gorgeous. I could move right in and not change a thing. Great tips on fabrics! I tend to be too matchy matchy mself and am trying to break out of that mold a bit and be more creative with mixing fabrics and prints. It's a fun series, Megan!

  6. I was so confused by "geographic" fabric, and then I realized she meant "geometric". Funny!
