Trying To Become A Morning Person:: The Sleep Cycle App

I have a confession, I'm not a morning person. AT ALL.
In fact, I would rank having to wake up to an alarm at the top of my list of things I despise. {A little dramatic, but I really really hate alarms}. I know, I'm in my 20's and probably shouldn't love sleeping as much as I do, but I can't help it. I just do.

I am also one of those people that has been known to snooze for a solid 30-40 min. every morning to delay the inevitable fact that I'll eventually have to get up out of my cozy bed. A few years ago when someone would tell me they snoozed, even for a few minutes, I would give them a puzzled look. I didn't understand why you wouldn't just set your alarm for the time you actually wanted to get up, and get up then. Why set your alarm extra early just to hear it go off multiple times?

But over the course of the last few years, I have become one of 'those' people. A snoozer. I don't know how I've become this person, but I have.

I really want to change this bad habit and learn to be more of a morning person {or at least learn to hate my alarm clock less}.

Last week Sarah over at Thrifty Decor Chick shared that she too would love to become an early bird and mentioned an app you can download called Sleep Cycle.

I was intrigued, so I checked it out.

Here's what Sleep Cycle says about your alarm clock waking you up at the wrong time::

Have you ever woken up feeling completely wrecked when the alarm clock goes off, despite the fact that you have slept "enough" hours? When this happens you have probably been awakened during a deep sleep phase, and your whole day can turn into one long zombie marathon.

I know I've felt groggy when my alarm clock has gone off. The idea behind Sleep Cycle is to wake you up when you are in your lightest sleep phase to avoid feeling this way but instead wake up feeling refreshed.

Basically, you set the alarm for whatever time you need to get up and the app wakes you up within a 30 min. window when you are in the lightest sleep phase. The app monitors your sleep phases throughout the night based on your movement.

I have only used it for the past three nights, but so far I'm pretty pleased. I still snooze at least once {once is better than 3 or 4 times, baby steps}, but I don't feel super groggy like I have before. I feel like I could get up right when the alarm goes off, I'm just too lazy to get up right away. :)

And what's really cool is you can see your sleeping pattern in a graph after each night.

You can see how long it took you to go to sleep, how often you woke up, and how much sleep total you get each night. Pretty neat!

I'm planning to keep using it for a while to see if it eventually helps me get over the snooze habit completely. Fingers crossed!

Are you a morning person? Any tips on how to be a morning person?

  1. That really is cool! I am a very early riser so I won't have to try this . . .
